Udvartana is an Ayurvedic treatment in which a specifically prepared herbal paste or powder is massaged throughout the body. It is a treatment used to help with weight loss or detoxification. Udvartana is considered as one of the Best ayurvedic treatment in Kerala. Udvartana entails a dry powder massage below the neck, and the herbal mixture can also be blended with therapeutic oils if skin irritation or other concerns are discovered during the therapy. The massage is done in the opposite direction of the hair follicles and lasts at least 45 minutes. After 15 to 20 minutes, the client is suggested to take a warm water bath followed by milder skin moisturising.

Udvartana means “to move something in an upward direction” in Sanskrit. The upward orientation of the strokes employed during the massage is referred to as this. The vigorous massage techniques, together with the penetrating herbs, generate heat in the body, which aids in the reduction of lethargy, the release of toxins, the reduction of fluid retention, and the enhancement of circulation.

Types of Udvartana

There are two kinds of Udvartana, and the substances employed depend on the condition:

Snigdha Udvartana : This treatment begins with rubbing warm herbalised oils into the body to prepare the skin for the application of the herbal paste. The heated herbal paste is then massaged into the body in quick upward strokes.

Ruksha Udvartana : With quick upward strokes, the heated herbal powder is applied to the body. Because this is a dry massage, no herbal oil is used throughout the therapy.
